The Abandoned Carts Report shows every shopping cart a visitor started but never turned into an order. Use it to see how many potential sales are slipping away, which products get abandoned most often, and to clean up old test or guest carts you no longer need.
Requirements
- PHP 8.3.0+
- Joomla! 6.x
- J2Commerce 6.x
Purchase and Download
Step 1: Go to the J2Commerce website and locate Abandoned Carts Report under Reports.
Step 2: Click View Details -> Add to Cart -> Checkout.
Step 3: Go to My Downloads under your profile button at the top right corner and search for the report. Click Available Versions -> View Files -> Download Now.
Install the Report
You can install the Abandoned Carts Report using the Joomla installer.
- In the Joomla admin, go to System -> Install -> Extensions.
- Upload the ZIP file, or use the Install from URL option.
Enable and Access the Report
There are two ways to reach Reports:
Option A: Go to the J2Commerce icon at the top right corner -> Analytics -> Reports.
Option B: Go to Components on the left sidebar -> J2Commerce -> Dashboard -> Analytics -> Reports.
- Find Abandoned Carts Report in the list.
- Click its status icon. It turns from a red X to a green checkmark, meaning the report is now enabled.
- Click View Report.
The report opens with a data table listing every abandoned cart that matches your current filters.
Understanding the Report
A cart counts as "abandoned" when it:
- Has at least one item in it, and
- Has not been converted into an order.
Saved wishlists are never counted as abandoned carts, and a cart drops off this report automatically the moment the shopper completes checkout.
Info
You never need to clean this list up yourself just because a shopper finished buying. Completed carts disappear from the report on their own.
Data Table Columns
#: Row number.
Cart ID: The internal J2Commerce cart ID.
User: The shopper name and account ID if they were logged in, or Guest with a short reference code if they checked out anonymously. This code is not the shopper real session ID, it only helps you tell one guest cart apart from another.
Email: The email address on file for the shopper account. This is blank for guest carts.
Items: The number of line items in the cart. Click the number to expand the cart and see exactly what is inside.
Total: The current value of the cart, based on each item price and quantity.
IP Address: The IP address the shopper last used while building the cart.
Last Activity: The date and time the cart was last updated.
Actions: A trash icon to remove the entire cart.
A Total row at the bottom of the table adds up the Items and Total columns for every cart currently shown.
Viewing Cart Items
Click the number inside the Items column for any cart to expand a panel showing exactly what that shopper had in their cart:
- Product: The product name and its product type (for example, Simple or Variable).
- Qty: The quantity of that item.
- Actions: A button to remove just that one item.
Click the Items number again to collapse the panel.
Removing Abandoned Carts
You can clean up abandoned carts directly from the report, for example to clear out test carts or old guest carts you no longer need to track.
Info
Removing a cart or a cart item cannot be undone. This action requires the highest J2Commerce permission level (Admin), which is normally reserved for Super Users. Everyone else can still view and export the report, but the remove buttons will not work for them.
Remove a Single Item
- Expand the cart (click its Items count).
- Click the trash icon on the item row.
- Confirm the removal when prompted.
If that was the last item in the cart, the entire cart disappears from the report.
Remove an Entire Cart
- Click the trash icon in the Actions column of the cart row.
- Confirm the removal when prompted.
This permanently deletes the cart and every item in it.
Remove All Displayed Carts
Use this to clear every abandoned cart that matches your current filters in one step.
- Apply any filters you want (see Filtering Your Data below).
- Click Remove All in the toolbar.
- Confirm the removal when prompted.
The page reloads once the removal finishes and reports how many carts were removed.
Filtering Your Data
Use the filter toolbar above the table to narrow down the results.
Search
Type a shopper name, email address, or IP address into the search box and press Enter. If you type a number instead, the search also matches Cart ID.
Duration
Choose a preset time period or set a custom date range, based on when the cart was last active:
Today: Carts active today
This Week: Carts active during the current week
This Month: Carts active during the current month
This Year: Carts active during the current year
Last 7 Days: Carts active in the past 7 days
Last Month: Carts active during the previous calendar month
Last Year: Carts active during the previous calendar year
Custom: Enter a specific From Date and To Date
When you select Custom, two date picker fields appear so you can define the exact range.
Sorting
Click any sortable column header, Cart ID, User, Items, Total, or Last Activity, to sort the table by that column. Click again to reverse the direction. You can also use the Sort By dropdown to choose from:
- Cart ID (ascending or descending)
- User (ascending or descending)
- Items (ascending or descending)
- Total (ascending or descending)
- Last Activity (ascending or descending)
- Created (ascending or descending)
By default, the report sorts by Last Activity in descending order, showing the most recently abandoned carts first.
Exporting to CSV
Click Export CSV in the toolbar to download the full report as a CSV file. The export includes all filtered results (not just the current page) with these columns:
- Cart ID
- User
- Items
- Total
- Created
- Last Activity
- IP Address
- Products (a semicolon-separated list of every product name in the cart)
A totals row is included at the bottom of the exported file. Open the CSV in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet application for further analysis.
Tip
J2Commerce does not send abandoned-cart reminder emails on its own. Export this report regularly and follow up with your logged-in shoppers yourself, or import the list into your email marketing tool.
Tips
- Check this report weekly. A rising abandoned cart total, or the same products showing up again and again, can point to a pricing, shipping, or checkout problem worth investigating.
- Filter by Duration before exporting. This keeps your CSV focused on a specific time window instead of every cart your store has ever collected.
- Use Remove All carefully. It deletes every cart matching your current filters, not just the ones visible on the current page. Narrow your filters first if you only want to clear a specific batch.
- Guest reference codes are for comparison only. They let you tell two guest carts apart, but they cannot be used to look up or contact the shopper.
Troubleshooting
No abandoned carts appear
This usually means every cart has already been converted into an order, your filters are too narrow, or the report is not enabled yet.
- Clear all filters by resetting the search box and duration dropdown.
- Go to the J2Commerce icon at the top right corner -> Analytics -> Reports and confirm Abandoned Carts Report shows a green checkmark.
The remove buttons do not do anything
Removing carts, cart items, or using Remove All requires the Admin permission level for J2Commerce. Viewing and exporting the report does not require this level of access.
- Log in with a Super User account, or ask your Super User to grant your account Admin access to J2Commerce.
- Try the removal action again.
A cart I just checked out with still shows in the report
This should not normally happen, since completed carts are excluded automatically. It usually means the order was not saved successfully.
- Go to J2Commerce -> Sales -> Orders and search for the order using the shopper name or email.
- If the order exists, refresh the Abandoned Carts Report. It should no longer list that cart.
- If the order does not exist, the checkout did not complete; treat the cart as genuinely abandoned.
